Bridging the skills gap to empower charities to make a difference in the world

"Bridges for Charity" (BfC) is an international non-profit organization incorporated under Swiss law, that seeks to empower charities to make a difference in the world. We observed that many charities have wonderful plans and intensions, but are sometimes faced with the obstacle of overcoming the skills and resource gap. As such, we hope to bridge this gap, empowering charities to maximise their effectiveness through connecting them to pro-bono advisory services.

While BfC helps charities, our sister organisation "Bridges for Enterprise" (BfE) seeks to empower social enterprises by making social enterprise startups investor-ready through the advisory services of our global network of students and professionals, thereby empowering them to create enduring social impact. "To empower charities by connecting them to pro-bono advisory services that enhance their effort to make a difference in the world"

From 2018-2019, we will be focusing our efforts primarily on empowering charities that work with beneficiaries who are homeless & marginalized in urban areas.

  • Homelessness is a growing problem worldwide, with devastating consequences

    • Growing trend of rural urban migration is set to increase the problem of homelessness. 55% of today’s global population of 7.6 billion is concentrated in urban centers, up from the 30% of the global population of 2.5 billion in 1950.

    • It is estimated that no less than 150 million people, or about 2 percent of the world’s population, are homeless. However, about 1.6 billion, more than 20 percent of the world’s population, may lack adequate housing.

    • The problem is also worsening in affluent countries such as UK, with over 4500 people sleeping rough every night.

  • We see that there is a great opportunity for professionals in the real estate sector to contribute to the alleviation of the problem of homelessness

    • The issue of homelessness and lack of shelter is intricately linked to the supply of housing provided by the government, private and/or charitable sector

    • We are hoping that innovative  solutions can arise that allow for the alleviation of the problem

    • Through the charities on the network, we have many exciting opportunities for skilled professionals to get involved via skills based probono volunteering

    • Examples of opportunities include real estate finance professionals doing financial appraisals for development of affordable housing sites on charity promises, or professionals in design and construction doing probono advisory on renovation work of charities helping the homeless.
